The Kiskadee is a bird native to Guyana and often referred to in Edgar Mittelholzer's brilliant novel, The Life and Death of Sylvia (1953). The bird is so named because its cry seemed by French colonists to be enquiring: "Qu’ est ce qu’il dit?". So what did he say? This blog is about two key topics: EDGAR MITTELHOLZER (his life and his works) and ME (my encounter with Mittelholzer and tales of life in Guyana).

The Ferry - 12th September 2014

Rod and I are stuck on the ferry at Supenaam. A bus in front of us is so laden with produce that it has got stuck trying to get over the exit ramp. Nuff 'fat' men trying to haul the bus over. It ain't moving. The minibus driver meantime refusin' to off load the contents of the vehicle. Says rain fallin' bad, everyt'ing gon spoil. Just one of my daily lessons in patience. My halo grows...I might be sufficiently virtuous to enter a convent on my return to Blighty.
